Louise and the Kindness Elf....

My grandgirl, Miss Bee, has a love affair with dolls and her baby.  Baby Jane is not a doll (Pssst, yes, she is, but Bee says no.).  Baby Jane is her baby and Miss Bee is the Mommy.  Period.  Dollies on the other hand, are dollies.  They're more like friends rather than children who need mothering.  Louise, one of Bee's dollies, needed a hair makeover.  The first hairstyle Louise had was my favorite, but the fluffy, soft hair shed all over everything and Mommy said we must do something else.  So in came the pink hairstyle.  I liked this one too, but it got  mangled, and so it was time for Louise to get a reasonable hairstyle that wouldn't pull out or shed.  I'm hoping this is it.  Brown, loopy pigtails.  I will admit to you, because you are my friends, that I will never make another dolly again.  I think they are fussy and difficult, and of all the sewing projects I've made, this is the most tedious -- from the body to the tiny seams in doll clothes.  I just don't want to do it anymore.  So although I love the Wee Wonderful dollies -- and you really should go see how cute they are -- I am done trying to create them.  Instead, I will buy them from Land of Nod.  I think they are reasonably priced there and well worth the money in comparison to my sanity.

Have you heard of the Kindness Elves?  They are the opposite of Elf on the Shelf.  Instead of naughty deeds, Kindness Elf does thoughtful, loving deeds.  Hillary Lang, from Wee Wonderfuls, made her adorable version of the Kindness Elf with one of her patterns.  I even thought of making one..........but no.  I want to have a kind, cheerful attitude for Thanksgiving.

  1. Yes, I think it is quite enough that you take on the job of being the makeover artist/hairdresser for the dollies! You do a good job at that, and I hope no one asks me to do anything similar. ;-)

  3. She reminds me of the the little doll in Rudolph. My absolute favorite Christmas movie. I totally understand moving on. That looks very complicated. You should be proud though it is the perfect doll.

  4. Louise is adorable. I like all her hairstyles and little girls love to give their dollies a makeover. The braided look is good and will be very practical, I think. Now you've decided not to make any more dolls Louise is going to be especially treasured.

  5. Ha ha ha! How do people do those tiny seam allowances and turn of fabric with Barbie clothes? There must be an easy way. I am supposed to be making American Girl doll clothes. I can't see my way to get going on it. I use the excuse that I don't have the right Velcro. The dollies you made are SO SPECIAL!

  7. I think they are nice dollies. I like their hair now too.
I do enjoy making dolls. I like stuffed animals best though.
I see patterns and I think wouldn't the kiddos like that. Then I think I would have to make eight and that is a lot.
I used to make six of everything and that was a lot too. I think I would just buy them like you said. I like that idea of a nice elf too.
I still have my dollies. In my hope chest. I love them still. :) I know they still remember my secrets.

  8. You made me chuckle with this post. You are so good at all things sewing and needle-ish that I have to believe you when you say this is difficult. But OH is she EVER cute and how many dolls do you know who get to change out their hair like this one. Seriously cool. She is a treasure and you make me want to be more crafty (but not with a doll). You also reminded me of a doll sewing class at our co-op this past semester. The kids all made dolls and they turned out super cute. I am not sure how difficult they were but the kids are on the young side (maybe 3rd-5th grade). Anyhoo....totally adorable. You are a good granny.

  9. You are too funny! Definitely best to keep your sanity in tact for Thanksgiving. Your little doll is just adorable. I think doll making is fussy too -- but my little secret is that I can't wait to make Raggedy Ann and Andys someday -- I sure hope I get the chance!!!

  10. That's so funny! I didn't even notice that it was the same dolly in all three photos :) The changes in hair style really do make her a NEW doll. Is that first yarn Homespun? It is a very furry yarn. I like all the styles. Thanks for the warning about how tedious the project is! THat's good to know before I commit myself :)
