If you give a mouse a cookie...

Today I had the cookie baking bug.  I made our favorite Soft Molasses Cookies and then I decided to try out a Snickerdoodle recipe.  I didn't grow up on Snickerdoodles and neither did Hubby and so therefore our kids did not eat Snickerdoodle.  It is not a cookie that is in my repertoire, but today I baked my first-ever batch of Snickerdoodles from my worn out Betty Crocker cookbook, and like I so often do, I made an alteration.  I dumped a cup or so of Hershey's Cinnamon Chips into the dough.  Oh dear, these were so good.  Next up was a cookie that I've made a few times before.  It's from Susan Branch's book, Christmas from the Heart of the Home, and the recipe is Annie Hall's Butter Cookies.  They are scrumptious in their own right, but today I was thinking of Pecan Sandies so I made the butter cookie recipe, rolled the dough into small 1 inch balls, dipped one half in course sugar and then smooshed a pecan half into each ball and baked them as per the recipe.  It was just as I had imagined -- buttery, sweet, with a rich nutty crunch.

I've been sharing cookies and coffee today with three Hereford ranchers who came to look at bulls.   They liked the bulls and the cookies.  Hubs and I have been "off sugar" for a couple months although I occasionally will have a cookie (a single cookie) now and then.  Well, today I had 4.  Or was it 5?  I'm really not sure now.  I lost track.  If you give a mouse a cookie, she'll ask for another one.  That's how the story goes around here!  Hubs....well, he didn't even have one!   He just had a few pecans.   He's a good boy!

Are you baking cookies?  What are your family favorites?

  1. We made spritz today, but we have a whole lot more recipes planned. Like you, I have a hard time eating just one. That's one of the reasons I like to share :-)

  2. I am clueless about spritz cookies too. Wasn't raised on them either, but I've had them and I think they are so pretty and tasty! Sharing is always nice.

  3. We love sugar cookies iced with frosting and cut out with cookie cutter in Christmas shapes. Your cookies look delicious.

  4. I like the name of all your cookies and I'm sure they are delicious. Our grandchildren like to make gingerbread or cinnamon cookies.

  5. I'm baking our traditional Christmas cookies, which are very rich with butter and sugar, and also tried a new recipe that involved Hershey's Kisses (but no peanut butter). I didn't grow up with Snickerdoodles either, but for some reason Will and I decided to make some a couple of years ago, and now they're part of our cookie rotation.

  7. I want a cookie. Wow...good for hubs! I didn't grow up with a cookie tradition at Christmas, mostly we had Russian pastries but the years my mom "went American" and made cookies I enjoyed them all. I have cookie years and non cookie years around here. I think my favorites are melt in your mouth cookies...not crunchy. My kids enjoy snickerdoodles. Maybe I'll bake up a batch this year for them...

  8. Christmas is my chance to try out new cookies and bake the old favorites too. Other times of the year I don't have anyone handy to serve them to, so I end up eating way more than 5. My husband sounds as self-controlled as yours - He likes about one cookie maybe 2x a week at the most. So I try to keep some in the freezer for him. I'm going to start today in earnest on my Christmas baking!

    1. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who can gobble 5+ cookies at a whack. I've done better these past couple days. The sugar makes my mouth hurt now. Still....gotta have a cookie at Christmas.

  9. Oh, I want a molasses cookie! You guys deserve a little treat and I totally relate to the 4-5 cookies. I've been minimizing sugar (not totally, but just limiting it and being conscious of it) but last week I was so hor.mon.al all I could think about was eating a praline. So I made some for the first time ever and ate 3 of them! They were soooooo good, but I think 3 was too much. :)

    1. I wonder why you (and I) would crave a praline or pecan cookie? It sure was good! Cookie binge-rs love company.

  10. Your cookies looks awesome Ms. Gumbo! I WISH I were making cookies this week -- slight hitch in the plan. I did manage a batch of my jumbo snickerdoodles last weekend, but they weren't for Christmas -- just a BigDaddy treat. I think your ginger cookes and those snickerdoodles are my too favorites to bake and take to him. I'm a cookie binger too, so don't feel too badly. And there's NO way I could go without sugar, so I'm not even going to try LOL!
