First Farmers Market...

 OnlyDaughter

Gumbo Lily

Only Daughter and I did our first Farmers Market in Cowtown, USA this past week.
It was a good beginning -- not a very big crowd,
but we sold the majority of what we had for sale
which included:

~~~~~~~~~
Fresh Garden Lettuce
Zucchini Bread:
Double Chocolate & Lemon Rosemary
Country Eggs
Fresh Herbs
Fresh Picked Flowers
Aunt Grace's Laundry Soap
Bee Balm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We offered samples of our breads for all who passed by our stand
which really did help us to sell it.
We offered samples of herbal iced tea that I made with:
Alfalfa, Lemongrass, and Mint.
Many were tentative about trying my alfalfa tea, but after I explained
that it was similar to a green tea, they tried it.
All were surprised that they really liked it!
If alfalfa is good for cows and sheep, it's good for humans too!
Check out this link for the Benefits of Alfalfa.
I first read about it in one of my favorite herbal books:

We learned a lot at our first Farmers Market
and we plan to do it again.

Do you go to Farmers Markets?  What do you like to buy there?

    1. Yes, we were there. We won't be at the Farmers Market next week because of the Butte/Lawrence Co. Fair, but hope to the following week.

  3. I haven't been to a Farmers Market for a few years. Must go again soon. Your display is very attractive. Nice that you sold most everything.

  4. Jody, I'm excited for you!! That's a nice selection. I've been at our market for over 6 years. I've found that it's wise to diversify and offer a wide range of items. It keeps your sales more level from month to month.Does anyone knit or crochet? You could add yarn goods in the fall/winter. Also, your stitchery items would be lovely if you can get a good price for them. They are labor intensive. Sewn items are good too.
    Once people discover the wonders of your bee balm, they will be back for more. Also, I keep a plastic tub of it with me at market, and I refill people's containers at a discount. They love that.

    The secret to selling at the market is just to GO, even if sales have been low, even if you don't want to, even if the weather is hot, etc. Consistency builds customer base. I think you'll do great?

    Do you have to have a state-inspected kitchen to sell baked goods? Sadly, we do, and the inspection standards in NC are such that we would not qualify (no indoor pets), so I can't sell any food items. Wish I could.

    Your table looks great!!

    1. Our farmers market is only from June - October. My daughter does crochet so she might choose to do some of that. I thought about giving refills of Bee Balm for a discount. That's a good idea. Great tips you have for us, MK. So far, we do not need state-inspected kitchen for what we do.

  5. So excited about your farmer's market report! I wish I could come to yours. I go sometimes. My husband goes to the one in Raleigh to buy cantaloupe and tomatoes to supplement our own supply.

  6. How fun!! I would come to your Farmers Market in a heartbeat. What a nice selection.
    You know I don't go to Farmers Markets because they are on Saturday and I am working here on Saturday.
    It would be nice though I think. I am glad you sold out. Very impressive. I think your list of what you were selling were very nice.

  8. I'd like to come to your farmers market! I have that book you mentioned because of you mentioning it a while back (big hug!)
    You guys look adorable there, you two Gumbo Lilies.
    I should look today and find a Tuesday market. There are different farmers markets on certain days.
    I miss you and send you heaps of love and friendship.

  11. I have to say that I've never heard of alfalfa tea before, but I love trying new things. Your stand looked beautiful. I would certainly be attracted to it if I were shopping the market. I find the same thing about your charming blog and am becoming your newest follower. I would also like to invite you over to my blog in hopes that you like it, too :)
    Keep Smiling!
    Your blogging sister,
    Connie :)

  12. Dallas' Farmer's Market is year round and I haven't been in a while...it's not like the old days where it really was a true Farmer's Market, but it still has a fun atmosphere and wonderful sights and smells :-). Where Dillon lives (Williamsburg, VA), there is still a real farmer's market each Saturday morning and it is wonderful. I look forward to going there when I visit in late September. The items you chose to sell sound perfect, Jody. Love to you from Texas!
