Tomatoes, tomatoes...

Just when I'm able to have as many of these (tomato sandwiches) as I want, and just when I am picking tomatoes by the baskets, tonight and tomorrow night we have frost warnings!  Thankfully, I picked every red tomato on the vine today.  I ate some, I gave some to DaughterInLove, and tonight I am making my favorite Tomato Jam.  It tastes something like rustic, spicy ketchup and we love it on a burger or on any meat. I like it on toast too.  Hubs and I covered the tomato vines tonight, and I do hope we save them since there are gobs of unripened tomatoes left to have their lives fulfilled in my canning jars.  It is very typical for us to have an early frost and then have a couple more weeks of warm weather.  We'll see!

  3. I hope the rest of your crop ripen successfully. We manage to gather ours and eat fresh as they ripen or bottle on a smaller scale than we would in Italy. The ones in the covered yard have done better than the ones in the glasshouse. They have had some blight, which is another problem when growing such produce.

  8. It's already frozen hard here several nights.

I am going to check this tomato jam recipe out--sounds neat.

I just love cream cheese & tomato's on toast...with salt and pepper. Almost makes my mouth water thinking about it.

  9. Oh yum. I have some ready for a new recipe I am going to try for lunch...broiling them with a little oil, parm cheese and basil. You really do have extremes in weather! I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around a freeze right now.

  10. You probably already know this (or we've talked about it before?) but if you know they're gonna get frozen, go ahead and pick your green tomatoes. Then wrap them in newspaper and put them gently in open boxes, in a dark cool place inside. Just check them regularly, and remove the ones that are ripening. My mom and I did this last year, and we had flavorful red tomatoes into December -- felt like magic!

  13. I'm wondering what happened - did you get a frost? I'll be interested in the update.
What happens where we live is that the tomatoes go on living and bearing into October, but then rain threatens, and we have to pick all the ones that are near ripe so that they won't swell up and crack from the rain. So, many times I have run around the garden gathering fruits while drops are beginning to fall.
But as you said, you are just beginning to get your peak. Here's hoping you get a LOT more tomatoes before the end of the month!

  14. Hmmm - thought I left a comment but I don't see it here so I'll try again.

There's nothing better than fresh tomatoes off the vine - we're eating them daily here too. Hope yours survive the early frosts.
