Flowers in the veggie patch...

Do you plant a few flowers in your vegetable garden?
I always put some marigolds in amongst the tomatoes, and my dear mother-in-law taught me to plant a row of gladiola bulbs in the veggie patch.  This summer I have some volunteer sunflowers that I let grow up in the onions.

There's just something magical in a few bright orange marigolds
 peeking out here and there
or towering gladiola stalks lording their beauty
 over mounds of green vegetables.

For mine is just a little old-fashioned garden
where the flowers come together
to praise the Lord
and teach all who look upon them
to do likewise.

  2. Your blog reminds me of "home." It's a good feeling coming here.

My grandma always planted glads in her veggie patch too. I thought it was pure magic when we would take the white glads and place them in a vase of water infused with food coloring...it was practically worth writing into the papers, in my mind, seeing those flowers the next morning.

  4. Oh, yes! I like flowers in amongst the veggies. My favorite for adding the right splash of color is an orange zinnia - If I had room I'd have more ideas and flowers to include.

  6. Marigolds are some of the first flowers I ever noticed as a child. We grew them in cups at school and then brought them home and I planted mine in the flower bed. Very vibrant flowers you have growing! They are beautiful.

  7. What a wonderful link! I am looking forward to reading it all the way through a little at a time. I will have to remember the gladiola tip -- your MIL sounds like such a wise woman:)

  8. Lovely flowers! I think I planted more flowers this year than vegetables. :) I bought that book used from Amazon for two dollars. It came in a beautiful box and looked brand new. It is so lovely. I love the book too.

  9. I have one little marigold in the greenhouse. I don't have a lot of room, but it found it's space. I can't wait to have my outdoor beds because I will have marigolds and zinnias. I love your bold red glad!
