Of finches and swallowtails...

I'm trying to decide if this is a Cassin's Finch or a Purple Finch.  I thought it might be an ordinary House Finch, but I think the red colors are spread more through the wings and body than they are for the House Finch.  Either way,  my eye caught sight of him from the window as I was paying the bills today.  What a treat for my eyes and my spirit.
Mr. Finch has a friend in the basket with him nibbling on sunflower seeds.  This fellow is a junco.

I made a little time for embroidery today since I have given up on my crochet-edged pillowcases. Rather than cry, I decided to stop and move on to something I love, hence, the embroidered caterpillar and Swallowtail.

  1. I love that little red bird whatever he is. The cardinal is one of my favorites and this little one reminds me of the red card.

We have not figured a way yet to put birdseed out for the birds and not have it eaten in two swoops by the squirrels. Tried different baffles, feeders, etc. to no avail. We live on a treed and wooded lot and that is the downside.

  2. No. No. No. Don't cry. There's no crying in baseball or crocheting. I'm glad you are doing something you love!

PS--I just know you COULD make those pillowcases. I'm not twisting your arm, mind you, I'm just confirming that you COULD, not that you SHOULD. You go girl..do what you love!

  3. I'm not too knowledgeable about birds, but I agree, that one has way more color than the house finches I have known here in CA. It would color my whole day brilliant if I saw that bird!

  4. Oh, that little bird is so sweet!

I understand about giving up on the crocheted pillowcase edge. Were you doing the one from "You Go Girl" ?
I am stuck on the "firm foundation"! I am going to give it one more shot, and if I can't get it I am going to sew rick-rack on the darn thing and call it good.

  7. You sound like me with the crochet. It's how I feel about the piano, too. Why can't I just DO it? Following directions = HARD! Sweet bird. Aren't birds wonderful? I love their shape and their song and their skinny legs! (BIG HUG!)

  8. I love your basket feeder, and it looks like the beautiful birds do too. Would love to put up something like that but my little town has too many stray cats. I'd worry about the poor birds.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  10. You're inspiring me - I have 2 embroidery books from the library. They are such cute little stitches. Are we making something? Or just doing it for fun??

That looks like a purple finch to me - ours haven't arrived yet. Such a pretty bird.
