Out in the garden...

I refurbished the old metal chair that my mother-in-love used to have sitting out by her clothesline every summer. I think of her every time I sit down to rest in it or whenever it catches my eye. It is very eye-catching, isn't it?

What do you do with a worn-out pair of boots? Plant flowers in them! These were once my boots. I wore them until the dirt sifted in through those cracks.....which now make good drainage holes for the violas. I have a pair of Hubs' boots on my front porch with purple violas.

In the foreground are the profusely blooming bleeding hearts and in the background, sheets are hanging on the clothesline. I didn't really plan the picture this way, but I guess you could say that I'm "keeping it real."

Yes, in the poor man's garden grow
Far more than herbs and flowers ~
Kind thoughts, contentment, peace of mind,
And joy for weary hours.

  1. I love all this whimsey (the chair and the boots!!) and beauty in your garden! You showed me my very first real life bleeding heart several years ago. They remind me of fuschias! Thanks for giving me a peek!

  2. I can't think which I like better - sheets blowing in the breeze or the bleeding hearts - they both appeal!

Love your MIL's bright red chair and the flower boots!

  3. Wonderful pictures! I especially like the chair--the color and design of it. And now I know what to do with my old shoes that are too worn out to give to Good Will!

  5. Love the chair, Jody. I also love that you refer to it's previous owner as you mother-in-love. I'm assuming that you are talking about your mother-in-law?? What a lovely and loving way to refer to her. You're a good egg!

    Happy Day,

  6. That chair is so cool Jody. I wish they still made them that way -- with the little decoration in it. My MIL gave her old metal set to goodwill about 6 years ago. Arrgggghhhh -- if only I'd known before she did it!

  7. I love the chair! We've just refinished one two that has a double seat. We can't though find the little 'caps' that go on the 'doohickies' to keep it from coming off the frame. It's a glider. If I had a truck I'd just take it with me to the hardware store.

    Love the boots!!

  8. What memories. Reminds me of before I had a dryer and how good sheets smelled when you brought them in off the line..
These are the good things in life... memory boots, now protecting your flowers and so their usefullness goes now & on..

  9. Joyce,
I often wonder how something so beautiful as a bleeding heart can grow in my rough prairie climate, but it's a proven rough-neck!

    Island Sparrow,
    I like both too!

    Frances,
Perhaps you can have a pair of old shoes from every family member lined up with flowers growing in them!

    Clarice,
    Thanks! xxoo

    Ellen B.,
    THanks to you too.

    Cassie,
Yes, my mother-in-love is my mother-in-law. She used to live next door to me and was one of my dearest friends. I miss her.

    Thimbleanna,
I love the design on this chair too and they simply do not make the style anymore. I told Hubs that I want to make a mold of it and start a new "vintage" line of metal chairs. Whadayathink?

    Diana,
I hope you find the doohickies for your chair. I left those little caps off mine. It's just a ranch chair after all and I'll love it with or without the doohickies.

    Elsie,
I never really thought of my old boots protecting my flowers, but that's true. I can't quit hanging my sheets on the line. Even in chilly weather, I'll hang them out and if need be, bring them back in for a quick dry in the dryer.
