Thank God for dirty dishes?

The dishwasher is broken and it's uncertain when the parts will be in to fix it. I'm all for simple living and doing things the old-fashioned way, but I do miss my dishwasher.

There's a little poem taped to my window sashing. It's the same poem that was inscribed on a plate on my grandmother's kitchen wall, and I remember it very well because there were always piles and piles of dirty dishes at Grandma's -- especially when all of us were gathered. Isn't it funny the little things that a young girl will remember and cherish?

Dirty Dishes

Thank God for dirty dishes,
They have a tale to tell,
While other folks go hungry,
We're eating very well.
With health and home and happiness,
We shouldn't want to fuss,
For by this stack of evidence
God's very good to us!

  1. Hi Jody
I too mourn the loss of my dishwasher which went belly up two years ago now...Oh for the days of stacking and slamming!

  2. I don't know what I'd do without our dishwasher...otherwise we'd always have a constant stack of dirty dishes cluttering the sink and counters. Hope yours gets fixed soon...(and from playing "I Spy" in your photo, your dishwasher is exactly the same as mine)

  3. Isabella, I loved your comment of "stack and slam." That is it exactly!

Carla, my countertops are always in disarray now. I've been so spoiled by my DW. It's other nickname is "dirty dish keeper."
Out of sight, out of mind (mostly).

  4. Well, guess who just printed that nifty little poem and is taping it to HER window above her sink? ;) I hope you don't mind me being a copycat (yet AGAIN!).

I Spy a little Willow Tree figure on your windowsill...which is she? I've always loved these.

  5. Michele,
Copying is the BEST form of flattery, don't you think? Copy away! I'm glad you liked Grandma's poem too. Yes, there's a willow tree figure. I don't collect them, but a friend gave me this one that carries a teapot. It reminds me to show hospitality to whoever walks through the door.

  8. What a lovely poem :-)

We don't have a dishwasher at our cabin, and somehow I never mind doing the dishes there.

  9. Sometimes I enjoy the quiet time in the kitchen after everyone has cleared out. Me and warm soapy water.
I said Sometimes... not every time!
