Of the good laying breeds you mention, I have one RIR and two Barred Rocks. They are still laying well; I get about 2 eggs per day total. But my Ameracauna is not laying at all right now, and she was born last spring. I've hunted for hidden eggs, but found nothing. Our high temps are mostly in the 50s or maybe 60s now, so we're not really cold. They are happy. Here in the South, our hens struggle with heat in the summer much more than cold in winter. Thanks for all that wisdom!!M.K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/09205619221345704689noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6095103946834851624.post-42490631248940201452017-01-10T23:50:02.384-07:002017-01-10T23:50:02.384-07:00Thanks for all of the tips! I don't have chickens, but maybe someday. We do have them at school. I will double check to see how we are doing.Bonnie Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10052974547161586063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6095103946834851624.post-44657849709511459882017-01-10T16:04:49.423-07:002017-01-10T16:04:49.423-07:00I'm going to send a link with this post to our...I'm going to send a link with this post to our son and daughter in law who live in Northeastern Washington. Temps have been below zero and in the teens and they have two chicken coops to care for these days. Fun to see those double yolkers!ellen b.https://www.blogger.com/profile/14531430948905935301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6095103946834851624.post-78322612395478812472017-01-10T14:47:48.386-07:002017-01-10T14:47:48.386-07:00Jody, I forget if I asked you about this before, b...Jody, I forget if I asked you about this before, but have you never used a light with a timer through the winter, to keep the hours of (combined natural and artificial) light constant, thus preventing the dropoff in laying? Maybe your hens keep producing pretty steadily without that because they are young and recently started laying?

I enjoy reading about chickens, especially when you write so warmly and personally about them :-)GretchenJoannahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13641677400029070452noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6095103946834851624.post-53900886545545616062017-01-10T13:12:02.491-07:002017-01-10T13:12:02.491-07:00I love, love, love your chicken post! I am not a good farmer. I have always known this. I was looking at chicken hatcheries and so many are already sold out. Ron eats five eggs in the morning so I really need to get some hens. I wondered how you kept your hens warm with this cold weather. Mine are all out in the yard today because of the rain and today is kind of dry.
Thanks for taking all of the time to type this out, is full of such great information. Your hens are beautiful.Farm Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00998621464797636686noreply@blogger.com
